'The missing third: An out-of-school study of Pakistani 5-16-year-olds', conducted by Pak Alliance for Math and Science, reveals that over 20 million children between the ages of 5 and 16 years are out of school in Pakistan.

The study shows that 87 percent of children are out of school because of the high cost of education, and 13 percent face other problems. Thirty-one percent of the students who dropped out of school shortly after enrollment are unwilling to go back to school, and 19 percent said they could not afford it. Thirteen percent work to earn while 11 percent are not allowed to go to school, and  6 percent of children cannot go to school as these are far away.

The study is available at Pak Alliance for Math and Science.
